Words that Work

Everything in this world is decaying except what God has spoken into it.

The Words of God develop, but they don't decay.

1 Peter 1:23-24 (ESV)
23 since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God;

24 for
“All flesh is like grass
and all its glory like the flower of grass.

The grass withers,
    and the flower falls,

25 but the word of the Lord remains forever.”

And this word is the good news that was preached to you.

If we have been born again, our inner person doesn't decay because it has been born by God's incorruptible Word.

For us believers, this life is as bad as it gets.  If we are none believers, this life is as good as it gets.

Once a seed gets planted into ground and receives water.

Then, the life within the seed comes out.

It doesn't come out unless it is exposed to water and ground.

All life begins with a seed.

We began as a seed planted into our mother's womb.

Words planted into the human heart are like seed, ground, and water.

Planting is when you heard the Word of God for the first time.

Teaching is like the watering of seed.

1 Corinthians 3:6 (ESV)
I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth.

Words are when you first heard.

Faith isn't of the head.

It's of the heart.

Watering is explaining what you have heard.

Being born again is not visibly seen at first.

It's below the surface.

After it grows, it will become visible.

Romans 10:9-10 (ESV)
because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.

Seed produces after it's kind.

A salvation seed produces salvation.

A peace seed produces peace.

A healing seed produces healing.

1 Corinthians 3:9 (ESV)
...You are God's field...

You are God's garden for His seed.

Satan likes to plant weeds in God's garden.

It looks like wheat, but it is not.

He tries to plant depression and fear.

He waters it with more depression and fear.

Satan's seeds can control your life.

Satan's seeds drain the life out of you.  Choking out, the good seed.

Satan tries to sow bitterness about other people in you.

We need to recognize what he's trying to do it.

Some of God's seeds take root over night.

Some take longer because people are slow to water them.

The seed is dormant until it's watered.

Isaiah 55:6-8  (ESV)
“Seek the Lord while he may be found;

    call upon him while he is near;

let the wicked forsake his way,

    and the unrighteous man his thoughts;

let him return to the Lord, that he may have compassion on him,

and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

For my thoughts are not your thoughts,

neither are your ways my ways,

declares the Lord.

For as the heavens are higher than the earth,

so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.

God's thoughts are right.

A word is a thought container.

If you don't understand the thought, the words mean nothing.

Thoughts are spiritual.

Thoughts are spiritual substance.

You can't touch a thought.

It's of the spirit.

They can come from God.

Then, they are life.

They can come from Satan.

Then, they are death.

They are like seed.

Isaiah 55:10-11 (ESV)
10 “For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven

and do not return there but water the earth,

making it bring forth and sprout,

giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater,

11 so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth;

it shall not return to me empty,

but it shall accomplish that which I purpose,

and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.

When God does anything, he speaks it into the substance that He wants to change.

Bad thoughts beautifully said are evil.

God's thoughts said poorly can be life changing.

If it's an evil thought, it's from the evil one.

What you think matters.

Thoughts are seed.

They can be good or bad.

If you water them, they will grow out of you.

Acts 19:18-19  (ESV)
18 Also many of those who were now believers came, confessing and divulging their practices.

19 And a number of those who had practiced magic arts brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all.

And they counted the value of them and found it came to fifty thousand pieces of silver.

They got saved, and realized the evil thoughts that these books contained.

They didn't want evil to grow within them.

No human heart is immune from a seed.

We need to guard our eyes and ears.

Jeremiah 29:11  (ESV)
11 For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.

Dan Dehaan's Metro Bible Study

In the late 1970s, I attended an interdenominational Bible Study called “the Metro Bible Study” in Metro Atlanta, which began as a Small Group in “Dad” Charles Ellis’ basement. It was taught by Dan Dehaan, and eventually outgrew Dad Ellis’ basement by moving to the Griffin Middle School.  When I first started attending, it had grown to 300 teenagers who meet ever Tuesday night and featured Contemporary Christian Music played by “The Pat Terry Group”.  As the Metro Bible Study continued rapid growth, they eventually moved to the First Baptist Church of Smyrna, Georgia where it peaked around 1200 attendees.  In the summer of 1982, Dan Dehaan died in a plane crash and teacher John Riley took over. Under John Riley, the Bible Study grew to about 1,500 after eventually moving to Mt. Paran Church of God. When I was first invited to the “Metro Bible Study”, I didn’t go to hear Dan Dehaan teach because I didn’t know who he was.  What I went to hear...

Where is God when times get tough?

Mark 4:35-41 (NLT) 35  As evening came, Jesus said to his disciples, “Let’s cross to the other side of the lake.”  Faith is based upon something.  Jesus said that they were all going across the lake.  The disciples should have based their faith upon what Jesus had said.   36  So they took Jesus in the boat and started out, leaving the crowds behind (although other boats followed).  37  But soon a fierce storm came up. High waves were breaking into the boat, and it began to fill with water. You can be in the center of the will of God, and the journey can get tough.  38  Jesus was sleeping at the back of the boat with his head on a cushion.  Faith doesn't fret.  Jesus was in the same ship as they were, but he was relaxed and asleep.   The disciples woke him up, shouting, “Teacher, don’t you care that we’re going to drown?” Our mi...

The Worry Pill

Matthew 6:19-34 (NKJV) 19  “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal;  20  but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.  21  For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. 22  “The lamp of the body (the window that lets in the light) is the eye. If therefore your eye is good (opened), your whole body will be full of light.  23  But if your eye is bad (closed) , your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great  is  that darkness! (Our eyes allow light to give us direction).   24  “No one can serve two masters (an inability to focus in one direction); for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise t...
