When Disaster Strikes

Paul was once caught up in a Hurricane for days. Here is Paul's story.

Acts 27:18-19 (NKJV)

18 And because we were exceedingly tempest-tossed, the next day they lightened the ship.

19 On the third day we threw the ship’s tackle overboard with our own hands.

This is equipment that you'd need to operate the ship.

They were lightening their load, so they wouldn't sink.

That's how desperate they were.

20 Now when neither sun nor stars appeared for many days, and no small tempest beat on us, all hope that we would be saved was finally given up.

Doesn't Paul know that he has authority in the name of Jesus?

Why doesn't he cause this storm to cease?

Why didn't he command it "peace be still?"

21 But after long abstinence from food, then Paul stood in the midst of them and said, “Men, you should have listened to me, and not have sailed from Crete and incurred this disaster and loss.

Paul said, I told you so.

They didn't listen to him.

He didn't have the authority when to sail or not to sail.

He was a prisoner.

It wasn't his boat.

It wasn't his cargo.

They had lost his protection because they refused to listen to the Holy Spirit inside of Paul.

It almost cost them their lives.

Their disobedience was effecting him.

If they had listened to Paul, none of this would of happened.

Does it matter if you listen to what the Spirit of God tells you or not?

It could cost you your life.

If you ignore what God's Spirit says, you just can't fix it by quoting a few Scripture verses.

If you say and do stuff in the flesh not prompted by God, it doesn't work no matter how well meaning it is.

Paul couldn't get on the deck of that ship to stop that storm because none of them were suppose to be there.

But Paul didn't give up, and kept  praying about it.

It order to do something in the Spirit.  You've got to have a connection with the Spirit.

What would Jesus have done?

John 12:49  (NKJV)

(Jesus would have said)... the Father who sent Me gave Me a command, what I should say and what I should speak.

Jesus would have only done what God, His Father, told me to do and say.

Just like Paul.

Matthew 10:24 (NKJV)

24 “A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master.

We can't do something differently than the way the Lord did it, and have the same results.

Acts 27:22  (NKJV)

22 And now I (Paul) urge you to take
heart, for there will be no loss of life among you, but only of the ship.

If Paul had not been there, they would have all died.

Why couldn't Paul save the ship, too?

After praying to God, God had granted only to spare their lives because they set sail in disobedience.

John 15:7 (NKJV)

If you abide in Me (Jesus), and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.

To abide in Him, means to commune with Him.

You hear and see what to say and do from God.

You have to pray and speak by the prompting of the Holy Spirit.

Acts 27  (NKJV)

23 For there stood by me this night an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve,

24 saying, ‘Do not be afraid, Paul; you must be brought before Caesar; and indeed God has granted you all those who sail with you.’

Paul said, I heard from God!.

I'm on a mission for God.

Paul had asked God to spare all their lives and God gave them to him.

Paul, saved their lives.

God told Paul that you can't die here.

You must appear before Caesar.

Acts 27:25

25 Therefore take heart, men, for I (Paul) believe God that it will be just as it was told me.

You can't have faith for anything that comes off your head.

You must hear from God.

We must hear from God first.

John 5:30 (NKJV)

30 I (Jesus) can of Myself do nothing...

Mark 6:5 (NKJV)

Now He (Jesus) could do no mighty work there, except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them.

This will set you free.

If it is directed by the Holy Spirit, it will work.

If it isn't, it won't work (John 6:63).

John 15:7 (NKJV)

If you abide in Me (Jesus), and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.

Dan Dehaan's Metro Bible Study

In the late 1970s, I attended an interdenominational Bible Study called “the Metro Bible Study” in Metro Atlanta, which began as a Small Group in “Dad” Charles Ellis’ basement. It was taught by Dan Dehaan, and eventually outgrew Dad Ellis’ basement by moving to the Griffin Middle School.  When I first started attending, it had grown to 300 teenagers who meet ever Tuesday night and featured Contemporary Christian Music played by “The Pat Terry Group”.  As the Metro Bible Study continued rapid growth, they eventually moved to the First Baptist Church of Smyrna, Georgia where it peaked around 1200 attendees.  In the summer of 1982, Dan Dehaan died in a plane crash and teacher John Riley took over. Under John Riley, the Bible Study grew to about 1,500 after eventually moving to Mt. Paran Church of God. When I was first invited to the “Metro Bible Study”, I didn’t go to hear Dan Dehaan teach because I didn’t know who he was.  What I went to hear...

Where is God when times get tough?

Mark 4:35-41 (NLT) 35  As evening came, Jesus said to his disciples, “Let’s cross to the other side of the lake.”  Faith is based upon something.  Jesus said that they were all going across the lake.  The disciples should have based their faith upon what Jesus had said.   36  So they took Jesus in the boat and started out, leaving the crowds behind (although other boats followed).  37  But soon a fierce storm came up. High waves were breaking into the boat, and it began to fill with water. You can be in the center of the will of God, and the journey can get tough.  38  Jesus was sleeping at the back of the boat with his head on a cushion.  Faith doesn't fret.  Jesus was in the same ship as they were, but he was relaxed and asleep.   The disciples woke him up, shouting, “Teacher, don’t you care that we’re going to drown?” Our mi...

The Worry Pill

Matthew 6:19-34 (NKJV) 19  “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal;  20  but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.  21  For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. 22  “The lamp of the body (the window that lets in the light) is the eye. If therefore your eye is good (opened), your whole body will be full of light.  23  But if your eye is bad (closed) , your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great  is  that darkness! (Our eyes allow light to give us direction).   24  “No one can serve two masters (an inability to focus in one direction); for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise t...
