The Pull of Sin

Romans 6:11 (NKJV)

11 Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

If we felt dead to sin, we wouldn't have to reckon ourselves to be dead to sin.

We are in a world that's filled with sin.  We must realize that we are free when sin pulls at us.

Who we are in Christ Jesus is stronger than the impulses of sin.  We are dead to sin.  It has no control over us. We're dead to sin, but alive to God.

Romans 6:12 (NKJV)

12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts.

When we got born again, it was our inner person that got born again.  It wasn't our flesh that got born again.  Our bodies will do anything that we let it do.

James 4:17 (NKJV)

17 Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin.

With the Spirit of God in our lives, sin is powerless to make us to do anything.  Sin is violation of light.  Being saved, means that we are free from sin and it's power over us.

Matthew 1:21 (NKJV)

21 And she (Mary) will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.

Romans 6:12 (NKJV)

12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts.

If the Lord told us not to do it, then we have the freedom not to do it.  He wouldn't tell us to do something that we can't do.

Romans 6:13 (KJV)

13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.

As born again believers, can we yield our bodies to things that are wrong.  Yes, but we don't have too.  Can we yield our tongues to speak that which is wrong.  Yes, but we don't have too.

There are spiritual influences on the outside of us, and there are Spiritual influences inside of us.  It's up to us which influence we yield too.

We can be doing just fine, and in a moment of time a thought will come to us telling us that we feel bad.  It's up to us whether we yield to it.

Wrong thoughts and feelings come to us all.  Thoughts and feeling can come to our minds unexpected.  We must identify it, and determine it's origin.  We have a list...

Philippians 4:8  (NKJV)

Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.

If it's not on this list, don't let it in.  It's from the enemy.  Other influences will knock on our minds trying to get in and not the Lord.

2 Corinthians 7:1  (NKJV)

Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

The enemy is trying to get in too.  He wants our tongues, hands, and feet.  Don't give the devil something to work with in you. Do I let the enemy use me?

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (NKJV)

Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?

20 For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.

If you say anything that comes to mind, the enemy will talk through you.

Romans 6:13 (KJV)

13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.

It's up to us to yield ourselves to God. If we don't do it, it won't get done.  We are dead to sin.  We are alive to God.  We must reckon it that way.  We must call it that way.

Everything we are and do should be consecrated to God for His use.  If we don't make everything available to Him, it's just empty talk.

Romans 6 (NKJV)

14 For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.  15 What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.

Let's point our finger in sin's face, and say you will not dominate me any longer.  You don't control me!

Those who were under the law were not born again.  We are under Grace if we have surrendered to Jesus.  We've been born again. Our sins have not be covered but washed away.

Romans 6:16 (KJV)

16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?

Sin shall not control me!

Romans 6:17  (KJV)

17 But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.

We have opened the door of our hearts to Jesus and His words.

Romans 6:18 (KJV)

18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.

Morning, noon, and night, we yield ourselves to right and to God's Holy Spirit.

Romans 6:19 (KJV)

19 I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.

2 Corinthians 5:17 (KJV)

17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

Dan Dehaan's Metro Bible Study

In the late 1970s, I attended an interdenominational Bible Study called “the Metro Bible Study” in Metro Atlanta, which began as a Small Group in “Dad” Charles Ellis’ basement. It was taught by Dan Dehaan, and eventually outgrew Dad Ellis’ basement by moving to the Griffin Middle School.  When I first started attending, it had grown to 300 teenagers who meet ever Tuesday night and featured Contemporary Christian Music played by “The Pat Terry Group”.  As the Metro Bible Study continued rapid growth, they eventually moved to the First Baptist Church of Smyrna, Georgia where it peaked around 1200 attendees.  In the summer of 1982, Dan Dehaan died in a plane crash and teacher John Riley took over. Under John Riley, the Bible Study grew to about 1,500 after eventually moving to Mt. Paran Church of God. When I was first invited to the “Metro Bible Study”, I didn’t go to hear Dan Dehaan teach because I didn’t know who he was.  What I went to hear...

Where is God when times get tough?

Mark 4:35-41 (NLT) 35  As evening came, Jesus said to his disciples, “Let’s cross to the other side of the lake.”  Faith is based upon something.  Jesus said that they were all going across the lake.  The disciples should have based their faith upon what Jesus had said.   36  So they took Jesus in the boat and started out, leaving the crowds behind (although other boats followed).  37  But soon a fierce storm came up. High waves were breaking into the boat, and it began to fill with water. You can be in the center of the will of God, and the journey can get tough.  38  Jesus was sleeping at the back of the boat with his head on a cushion.  Faith doesn't fret.  Jesus was in the same ship as they were, but he was relaxed and asleep.   The disciples woke him up, shouting, “Teacher, don’t you care that we’re going to drown?” Our mi...

The Worry Pill

Matthew 6:19-34 (NKJV) 19  “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal;  20  but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.  21  For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. 22  “The lamp of the body (the window that lets in the light) is the eye. If therefore your eye is good (opened), your whole body will be full of light.  23  But if your eye is bad (closed) , your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great  is  that darkness! (Our eyes allow light to give us direction).   24  “No one can serve two masters (an inability to focus in one direction); for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise t...
