The Gifts of God

Psalm 112 (NLT)

Praise the Lord!

How joyful are those who fear the Lord
and delight in obeying his commands.

Their children will be successful everywhere;

an entire generation of godly people will be blessed.

They themselves will be wealthy,

and their good deeds will last forever.

Light shines in the darkness for the godly.

    They are generouscompassionate, and righteous.

Good comes to those who lend money generously
    and conduct their business fairly.

Such people will not be overcome by evil.

Those who are righteous will be long remembered.

They do not fear bad news;

they confidently trust the Lord to care for them.

They are confident and fearless
and can face their foes triumphantly.

They share freely and give generously to those in need.

Their good deeds will be remembered forever.

They will have influence and honor.

You can't give what you don't have.  If you don't want more, then you don't want to help anyone else. You ministry is in your abundance.

1 Timothy 6 (NLT)

17 Teach those who are rich in this world not to be proud and not to trust in their money, which is so unreliable.

Their trust should be in God, who richly gives us all we need for our enjoyment.

We must not trust in money by serving it or loving it. Money must not be our God.

18 Tell them to use their money to do good.

They should be rich in good works and generous to those in need, always being ready to share with others.

It's not going to upset the Lord for you to enjoy life.  In fact, it is His idea.

Philippians 4:4 (NLT)

Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again—rejoice!

Joy is a choice.

We must not be a slave of every thought or feeling that the enemy brings upon us.

When you chose to rejoice, you're choosing to believe in the goodness of God.

A choice to despair is a decision to doubt.  A choice to rejoice is a decision to believe.

You can rejoice no matter what comes upon you.

Deuteronomy 28 (NLT)

1If you fully obey the Lord your God and carefully keep all his commands that I am giving you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations of the world.

You will experience all these blessings if you obey the Lord your God:

Your towns and your fields
    will be blessed.

Your children and your crops
    will be blessed.

The offspring of your herds and flocks
    will be blessed.

Your fruit baskets and breadboards
    will be blessed.

Wherever you go and whatever you do,
    you will be blessed.

“The Lord will guarantee a blessing on everything you do and will fill your storehouses with grain.

The Lord your God will bless you in the land he is giving you.

You can't separate faith and joy.  If you are in faith, you are in joy.  If you are in faith, you obey.  If you aren't you won't.

Deuteronomy 28  (NLT)

45 If you refuse to listen to the Lord your God and to obey the commands and decrees he has given you,

all these curses will pursue and overtake you until you are destroyed.

47 If you do not serve the Lord your God with joy and enthusiasm for the abundant benefits you have received,

48 you will serve your enemies whom the Lord will send against you.

You can have a bunch of stuff, and still be cursed.

Proverbs 10:22 (NLT)

22 The blessing of the Lord makes a person rich,
and he adds no sorrow with it.

Riches cannot make you happy and content.  Natural things cannot give you spiritual satisfaction.  That's why the rich can be so unhappy.

A big part of God's blessings is the ability to enjoy it and to bless others.

Hebrews 7:7  (NLT)

And without question, the person who has the power to give a blessing is greater than the one who is blessed.

Ecclesiastes 3:13 (NLT)

13 And people should eat and drink and enjoy the fruits of their labor, for these are gifts from God.

Being able to enjoy what God gives you is a part of being blessed.

Ecclesiastes 5:18-19 (NLT)

18 Even so, I have noticed one thing, at least, that is good.

It is good for people to eat, drink, and enjoy their work under the sun during the short life God has given them, and to accept their lot in life.

19 And it is a good thing to receive wealth from God and the good health to enjoy it.

To enjoy your work and accept your lot in life—this is indeed a gift from God.

People who don't enjoy what they have are living like cursed people.

The blessed are empowered to enjoy the goodness of God.

You can be negative about anything or rejoice about everything.

It's a choice to doubt.

It's a choice to believe.

Psalm 103 (NLT)

A psalm of David.

Let all that I am praise the Lord;

with my whole heart, I will praise his holy name.

Let all that I am praise the Lord;
may I never forget the good things he does for me.

He forgives all my sins
    and heals all my diseases.

He redeems me from death
and crowns me with love and tender mercies.

He fills my life with good things.

My youth is renewed like the eagle’s!

If we love and recognize God, we can find joy in what others overlook.

Romans 10:12 (AMP)

... for the same Lord (Jesus) is Lord over all [of us], and [He is] abounding in riches (blessings) for all who call on Him [in faith and prayer].

Dan Dehaan's Metro Bible Study

In the late 1970s, I attended an interdenominational Bible Study called “the Metro Bible Study” in Metro Atlanta, which began as a Small Group in “Dad” Charles Ellis’ basement. It was taught by Dan Dehaan, and eventually outgrew Dad Ellis’ basement by moving to the Griffin Middle School.  When I first started attending, it had grown to 300 teenagers who meet ever Tuesday night and featured Contemporary Christian Music played by “The Pat Terry Group”.  As the Metro Bible Study continued rapid growth, they eventually moved to the First Baptist Church of Smyrna, Georgia where it peaked around 1200 attendees.  In the summer of 1982, Dan Dehaan died in a plane crash and teacher John Riley took over. Under John Riley, the Bible Study grew to about 1,500 after eventually moving to Mt. Paran Church of God. When I was first invited to the “Metro Bible Study”, I didn’t go to hear Dan Dehaan teach because I didn’t know who he was.  What I went to hear...

Where is God when times get tough?

Mark 4:35-41 (NLT) 35  As evening came, Jesus said to his disciples, “Let’s cross to the other side of the lake.”  Faith is based upon something.  Jesus said that they were all going across the lake.  The disciples should have based their faith upon what Jesus had said.   36  So they took Jesus in the boat and started out, leaving the crowds behind (although other boats followed).  37  But soon a fierce storm came up. High waves were breaking into the boat, and it began to fill with water. You can be in the center of the will of God, and the journey can get tough.  38  Jesus was sleeping at the back of the boat with his head on a cushion.  Faith doesn't fret.  Jesus was in the same ship as they were, but he was relaxed and asleep.   The disciples woke him up, shouting, “Teacher, don’t you care that we’re going to drown?” Our mi...

The Worry Pill

Matthew 6:19-34 (NKJV) 19  “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal;  20  but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.  21  For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. 22  “The lamp of the body (the window that lets in the light) is the eye. If therefore your eye is good (opened), your whole body will be full of light.  23  But if your eye is bad (closed) , your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great  is  that darkness! (Our eyes allow light to give us direction).   24  “No one can serve two masters (an inability to focus in one direction); for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise t...
