Faith, on solid ground?

Don't immerse yourself into studies that will lead you into more questions.

Faith is progressive.

Don't talk about what you don't know.  What you don't have. What you can't do.

Romans 1:17 (NKJV)
17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “The just shall live by faith.”

Talk about what you do know, and what you can do.  Then, you will perceive more of what you can know, and what you can do.

Faith will say that the Holy Spirit is my teacher.  He will show me things to come.  Talk about what you know (John 16:13).

Don't focus on what you don't know.  That's darkness and will lead to more darkness.

Start with this.

I'm saved, and my name is written in the book of life.

Thank God for it.

Don't focus upon what you don't have, and what you can't do.

Go around all the time thanking God for what you do know and what you can do.

Matthew 7  (NKJV)
Jesus speaking:
21 Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.
22 Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’
23 And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’
24 “Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock:
25 and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.

How do I build my life upon the rock?  It is by being a doers of what He says.

26 “But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand:
27 and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.”

The foolish man built a house, but it was in vain.  In good weather, a house on the sand seems fine.

During a storm is when you find out what the house was built upon.

We're living down here on a cursed filled earth.  Disasters will come.  Will your life collapse?

Luke 6:46  (NKJV)
Jesus speaking: “But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say?

Faith in Jesus is more than just talk.

It's more than a confession.

If you run your own life, Jesus is not your Lord.

If Jesus is your Lord, you will do what He says.

One of the phony faiths is dead faith.  It's all talk, but no do.

James 2:26 (NKJV)
26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

There is a lot of people who say Lord, Lord, but don't do what He says.

Do you worry?

Matthew 6:25 (NKJV)
Jesus speaking: “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?

Do you do what He says about worry?

Do you tithe?

Matthew 23:23 (NKJV)
Jesus speaking: “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone.

Do you do what He says about tithing?

If you say that Jesus is your Lord, but don't do what He says. It's just empty talk.

It may look fine as long as the sun is shinning.

You get on the rock by being a doer of the Word.

You find out if you are a faith person during the storm.

Do you dig down deeper in obedience to Jesus before the storm and during the storm?

Luke 6 (NKJV)
Jesus speaking:
46 “But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say?
47 Whoever comes to Me, and hears My sayings and does them, I will show you whom he is like:
48 He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently against that house, and could not shake (waver) it, for it was founded on the rock.

The storms will finally stop, and your faith will stand unshaken if your faith is real.

Then, God gets the glory because you did what God told you to do.

Real faith works.

49 But he who heard and did nothing is like a man who built a house on the earth without a foundation, against which the stream beat vehemently; and immediately it fell. And the ruin of that house was great.”

James 1:22 (NKJV)
22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.

These two men before the storm looked the same.

They both heard the same things.

They both built the same houses.

You wouldn't have known the difference until the storm hit.

This doesn't mean that faith doesn't work, or God let the foolish man down.

The foolish man didn't do what the Lord told him to do, which would have saved him.

God isn't playing around.

God's word is not suggestions.

Is He your Lord or not?

If you are wise, your house will be built in obedience to Jesus upon the rock.

Hebrews 11:4 (NKJV)
By faith Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, through which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts; and through it he being dead still speaks.

How do we know that Abel had faith?

He gave.

He didn't talk about giving.

He didn't pray about giving.

He actually gave.

Hebrews 11:7 (NKJV)
By faith Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared an ark for the saving of his household, by which he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.

How do we know that Noah had faith?

He built a ship.

He didn't just plan to build it, or pursue funding.

He actually did what God told him to do.

So many things conspire against us to be passive.

We have to fight through and obey.

If you'll take a step, things will start happening.

Hebrews 11:8  (NKJV)
By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going.

Tell me who is your Lord.

Is it your wife or your Momma?

Is Jesus your Lord?

Then, do what He says.

You'll find real faith in the doing.

When you step out in faith, you'll see the power of God.

Your flesh can get comfortable.

If the Lord told you to do it, there will be miracles on the other side of it.

You don't get a reward for laying on the beach.

Now is time to work.

Don't make this life your all and all.

It's time to get something done.

I'm a doer.

I'm not just talk.

I mean business with God.

Our confessions are powerless if we don't do what God has told us to do.

James 2  (NKJV)
14 What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him?
15 If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food,
16 and one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit?
17 Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.
18 But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.
19 You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe—and tremble!
20 But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead?
21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar?

Your faith is proven when it is backed up by your actions.

Abraham said, God, you have  everything.

God said I want Isaac.

Abraham backed his confession up.

Mark 10:17-22 New King James Version (NKJV)
17 Now as He was going out on the road, one came running, knelt before Him, and asked Him, “Good Teacher, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?”

18 So Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God.

19 You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery,’ ‘Do not murder,’ ‘Do not steal,’ ‘Do not bear false witness,’ ‘Do not defraud,’ ‘Honor your father and your mother.’ ”

20 And he answered and said to Him, “Teacher, all these things I have kept from my youth.”

21 Then Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “One thing you lack: Go your way, sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross, and follow Me.”

22 But he was sad at this word, and went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.

This man's faith was in his possessions.

This man was all talk.

When he had a chance to prove it, he just walked away.

Peter had a great confession, but it wasn't real.

Mark 14:29-37 (NKJV)
29 Peter said to Him, “Even if all are made to stumble, yet I will not be.
30 Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you that today, even this night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.”
31 But he spoke more vehemently, “If I have to die with You, I will not deny You!”
And they all said likewise.
32 Then they came to a place which was named Gethsemane; and He said to His disciples, “Sit here while I pray.”
33 And He took Peter, James, and John with Him, and He began to be troubled and deeply distressed.
34 Then He said to them, “My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch.”
35 He went a little farther, and fell on the ground, and prayed that if it were possible, the hour might pass from Him.
36 And He said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for You. Take this cup away from Me;nevertheless, not what I will, but what You will.
37 Then He came and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “Simon, are you sleeping? Could you not watch one hour?

If you won't do what Jesus tells you to do, your faith is just empty talk.

You won't get results until you do what He says.

John 2:5 NKJV)
His mother said to the servants, “Whatever He (Jesus) says to you, do it.

Faith can't work without submission.

It's dead faith.

Who's more than just a talker.

I believe you're a doer.

Dan Dehaan's Metro Bible Study

In the late 1970s, I attended an interdenominational Bible Study called “the Metro Bible Study” in Metro Atlanta, which began as a Small Group in “Dad” Charles Ellis’ basement. It was taught by Dan Dehaan, and eventually outgrew Dad Ellis’ basement by moving to the Griffin Middle School.  When I first started attending, it had grown to 300 teenagers who meet ever Tuesday night and featured Contemporary Christian Music played by “The Pat Terry Group”.  As the Metro Bible Study continued rapid growth, they eventually moved to the First Baptist Church of Smyrna, Georgia where it peaked around 1200 attendees.  In the summer of 1982, Dan Dehaan died in a plane crash and teacher John Riley took over. Under John Riley, the Bible Study grew to about 1,500 after eventually moving to Mt. Paran Church of God. When I was first invited to the “Metro Bible Study”, I didn’t go to hear Dan Dehaan teach because I didn’t know who he was.  What I went to hear...

Where is God when times get tough?

Mark 4:35-41 (NLT) 35  As evening came, Jesus said to his disciples, “Let’s cross to the other side of the lake.”  Faith is based upon something.  Jesus said that they were all going across the lake.  The disciples should have based their faith upon what Jesus had said.   36  So they took Jesus in the boat and started out, leaving the crowds behind (although other boats followed).  37  But soon a fierce storm came up. High waves were breaking into the boat, and it began to fill with water. You can be in the center of the will of God, and the journey can get tough.  38  Jesus was sleeping at the back of the boat with his head on a cushion.  Faith doesn't fret.  Jesus was in the same ship as they were, but he was relaxed and asleep.   The disciples woke him up, shouting, “Teacher, don’t you care that we’re going to drown?” Our mi...

The Worry Pill

Matthew 6:19-34 (NKJV) 19  “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal;  20  but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.  21  For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. 22  “The lamp of the body (the window that lets in the light) is the eye. If therefore your eye is good (opened), your whole body will be full of light.  23  But if your eye is bad (closed) , your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great  is  that darkness! (Our eyes allow light to give us direction).   24  “No one can serve two masters (an inability to focus in one direction); for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise t...
