Celebrate

Romans 8:5 (NKJV)

For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.

We can choose.

We can set our minds on the flesh or on the Spirit.

What makes you fleshy?

You're only aware of how your feel, what you see, hear, smell, or taste.   You set your mind on these things.

What makes you spiritual?

You are aware of God's Holy Spirit within you if you've asked for Him to be.

The key to becoming more aware of anything is by exercising it.

If all you're doing is exercising the flesh, what are you going to be aware of?

The flesh.

You're not just flesh.

If you're fleshy, you're only aware of the physical.

Our minds can be focused
on whichever direction we choose.

If you focus your attention on God within you, you lose awareness of the physical.

If you focus your mind inside, you'll become more aware of your born again spirit and God's Holy Spirit within you.

Romans 8:6  (NKJV)

For to be carnally (physically) minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

Don't spend all your time on physical stuff.

Ephesians 5:18 (NKJV)

18 And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit,

You get drunk by surrendering to the alcohol in the wine.

You get filled with the Holy Spirit by  surrendering yourself to Him.

It is a bigger sin not to surrender to the Holy Spirit than to get drunk with wine.

The more you follow the prompting of the Holy Spirit.  The more aware of Him you'll get.

To follow Him, it is to follow life, liberty, peace, and love.

1 Corinthians 14:1,3  (NKJV)

Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy.

But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men.

Prophesy is not foretelling.

It is speaking in your known tongue by inspiration.

Speaking tongues is like prophesy, but in an unknown tongue.

1 Corinthians 12:1  (NKJV)

Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant:

1 Corinthians 14:5  (NKJV)

I wish you all spoke with tongues, but even more that you prophesied;

for he who prophesies is greater than he who speaks with tongues,

unless indeed he interprets, that the church may receive edification.

If a prophet is speaking something about the future, it is a word of wisdom.

If it is about the present that no one else would know that is a word of knowledge.

1 Corinthians 14  (NKJV)

14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful.

15 What is the conclusion then?

I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding.

I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding.

We can speak in tongues and prophesy whenever we yield to the Holy Spirit.

He is always available.

Proverbs 17:22 (NKJV)
22 merry heart does good, like medicine,
But a broken spirit dries the bones.

We need to yield to the joy of the Lord.

Job 8:21 (NKJV)

21 He (God) will yet fill your mouth with laughing,
And your lips with rejoicing.

Job 5:22 (NKJV)

22 You shall laugh at destruction and famine,
And you shall not be afraid of the beasts of the earth.

We need to yield to the Lord and dance for joy.

Exodus 15:20  (NKJV)

20 Then Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took the timbrel in her hand;

and all the women went out after her with timbrels and with dances.

2 Samuel 6:14  (NKJV)

14 Then David danced before the Lord with all his might...

Psalm 149:3  (NKJV)

Let them praise His name with the dance;
Let them sing praises to Him with the timbrel and harp.

Psalm 150:4 (NKJV)

4 Praise Him with the timbrel and dance;
Praise Him with stringed instruments and flutes!

We need to sing for joy in the Lord.

1 Corinthians 14  (NKJV)

15 ... I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding.

Ephesians 5:18  (NKJV)

18 And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit,

19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and

spiritual songssinging and making melody in your heart to the Lord,

20 giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,

When the disciples got baptized with the Holy Spirit, they were mistaken for being drunk.

They were so full of joy.

Acts 2:15

15 For these are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day.

When they got filled with the Holy Spirit, they were singing, dancing, and laughing.

Receiving Jesus into your heart as your Lord and Savior brings great joy.

Revelation 3:20  (NKJV)

20 Behold, I (Jesus) stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.

Dan Dehaan's Metro Bible Study

In the late 1970s, I attended an interdenominational Bible Study called “the Metro Bible Study” in Metro Atlanta, which began as a Small Group in “Dad” Charles Ellis’ basement. It was taught by Dan Dehaan, and eventually outgrew Dad Ellis’ basement by moving to the Griffin Middle School.  When I first started attending, it had grown to 300 teenagers who meet ever Tuesday night and featured Contemporary Christian Music played by “The Pat Terry Group”.  As the Metro Bible Study continued rapid growth, they eventually moved to the First Baptist Church of Smyrna, Georgia where it peaked around 1200 attendees.  In the summer of 1982, Dan Dehaan died in a plane crash and teacher John Riley took over. Under John Riley, the Bible Study grew to about 1,500 after eventually moving to Mt. Paran Church of God. When I was first invited to the “Metro Bible Study”, I didn’t go to hear Dan Dehaan teach because I didn’t know who he was.  What I went to hear...

Where is God when times get tough?

Mark 4:35-41 (NLT) 35  As evening came, Jesus said to his disciples, “Let’s cross to the other side of the lake.”  Faith is based upon something.  Jesus said that they were all going across the lake.  The disciples should have based their faith upon what Jesus had said.   36  So they took Jesus in the boat and started out, leaving the crowds behind (although other boats followed).  37  But soon a fierce storm came up. High waves were breaking into the boat, and it began to fill with water. You can be in the center of the will of God, and the journey can get tough.  38  Jesus was sleeping at the back of the boat with his head on a cushion.  Faith doesn't fret.  Jesus was in the same ship as they were, but he was relaxed and asleep.   The disciples woke him up, shouting, “Teacher, don’t you care that we’re going to drown?” Our mi...

The Worry Pill

Matthew 6:19-34 (NKJV) 19  “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal;  20  but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.  21  For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. 22  “The lamp of the body (the window that lets in the light) is the eye. If therefore your eye is good (opened), your whole body will be full of light.  23  But if your eye is bad (closed) , your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great  is  that darkness! (Our eyes allow light to give us direction).   24  “No one can serve two masters (an inability to focus in one direction); for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise t...
