Authenticity Groups

New prospects will most probably attend a weekend worship service.

Since that is true, it is wise to speak to them in words & terms they understand.

I'm certainly not suggesting that God's Word be diluted,

but what I am saying is to communicate God's truth in words and phrases that anyone can understand.

Jesus adapted His message to His hearers, too.

Jesus told interesting stories about farming, birds, sheep, and children. He explained Biblical truth in an amazingly fun way.

However, when Jesus was in a smaller group, He cultivated an environment of give and take.

If you read John 13-17 for example, Jesus is responding to questions from Peter, Thomas, Philip, and Judas.

He's even reading facial expressions and observing group dynamics throughout.

If you're a small group teacher like Jesus, you should create an environment of give and take, too.

If you are a small group leader and you're more committed to delivering a lot of material,

you actually not following the small group teaching model of Christ, but you are following His large group model and miss applying it.

As a small group leader, your goal is to create a loving, relational environment that people can grow.

Realize that you're not going to be able to cover as much material as in the past

1. Realize that the class is not yours, and focus on giving Jesus glory.

2. Ask thought provoking questions.

3. Be gentle as you steer your group.

4. Be faithful to the truth in a loving way.

5. Be quick to admit a mistake if it becomes apparent.

6. Learn from others because God is teaching you through your class.

7. Avoid cutting people off if at all possible.

8. Thoughtfully listen when others speak.

9. Paraphrase back what others say to communicate understanding.

10. Maintain eye contact and smile.

11. Listen to the Holy Spirit as you speak and as others speak and adjust your lesson accordingly.

12. Don't allow unkind comments from participates, but encourage kind and respectful behavior from everyone.

Dan Dehaan's Metro Bible Study

In the late 1970s, I attended an interdenominational Bible Study called “the Metro Bible Study” in Metro Atlanta, which began as a Small Group in “Dad” Charles Ellis’ basement. It was taught by Dan Dehaan, and eventually outgrew Dad Ellis’ basement by moving to the Griffin Middle School.  When I first started attending, it had grown to 300 teenagers who meet ever Tuesday night and featured Contemporary Christian Music played by “The Pat Terry Group”.  As the Metro Bible Study continued rapid growth, they eventually moved to the First Baptist Church of Smyrna, Georgia where it peaked around 1200 attendees.  In the summer of 1982, Dan Dehaan died in a plane crash and teacher John Riley took over. Under John Riley, the Bible Study grew to about 1,500 after eventually moving to Mt. Paran Church of God. When I was first invited to the “Metro Bible Study”, I didn’t go to hear Dan Dehaan teach because I didn’t know who he was.  What I went to hear...

Where is God when times get tough?

Mark 4:35-41 (NLT) 35  As evening came, Jesus said to his disciples, “Let’s cross to the other side of the lake.”  Faith is based upon something.  Jesus said that they were all going across the lake.  The disciples should have based their faith upon what Jesus had said.   36  So they took Jesus in the boat and started out, leaving the crowds behind (although other boats followed).  37  But soon a fierce storm came up. High waves were breaking into the boat, and it began to fill with water. You can be in the center of the will of God, and the journey can get tough.  38  Jesus was sleeping at the back of the boat with his head on a cushion.  Faith doesn't fret.  Jesus was in the same ship as they were, but he was relaxed and asleep.   The disciples woke him up, shouting, “Teacher, don’t you care that we’re going to drown?” Our mi...

The Worry Pill

Matthew 6:19-34 (NKJV) 19  “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal;  20  but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.  21  For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. 22  “The lamp of the body (the window that lets in the light) is the eye. If therefore your eye is good (opened), your whole body will be full of light.  23  But if your eye is bad (closed) , your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great  is  that darkness! (Our eyes allow light to give us direction).   24  “No one can serve two masters (an inability to focus in one direction); for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise t...
